Mary Shafer

The Artist - Mary Shafer

Mary Shafer, originally from Chicago, Illinois, has been living in beautiful Coral Springs, Florida for the past year. She has studied commercial and fine art with a degree in Art History, and was most recently vice president of bath design for an international textile company in the South.

Mary's work in textile design has sold to numerous national accounts and her work has taken her to China and India, Japan, and Taiwan more often then she can count.

About five years ago she started painting master works on upholstered furniture for friends and family. "This was just an outlet primarily to combat stress. It's fun, and I love doing it." A typical wing chair (plenty of blank canvas) will take her approximately 40 hours. Mary's father was a portrait painter in Europe and she credits any talent she may have to him. Her goal is to make this a full time career. She will buy furniture pieces, new or antiques, reupholster them and then paint the art.

Mary will also be delighted to do commissioned work, on the patron's chairs, setee's etc. and do the painting of their choice. Two artists she will not attempt are Seurat. " ...all those dots? Who's got the time?" and DaVinci "...some things you just don't touch."

Mary's work can be seen at the Mary Martiin Gallery on old Broad Street in historic Charleston, SC. See this site for more information and Mary Martin's website at www.MaryMartinArt.com.
