Edgar Degas - Bench - SOLD

Front:“Two Dancers in a Landscape” c1895

This particular bench is an interpretation of Edgar Degas, "Two Dancers in a Landscape" painted in 1895. Degas was one of the most prolific of the Impressionists and we are all familiar with his paintings of the ballet scene in Paris. This piece is out of the ordinary for Degas since a large portion of the work is devoted to a lush landscape. Only one dancer is shown completely, the other is merely represented by an arm and a bit of her skirt, the rest of her figure being abruptly cut off from the viewer. It seems that quite an argument is going on between the two dancers as we see the main figure leaning forward, arms on hips, and the other seems to reply with the age-old gesture of the raised hand. Lovely, you can't help but wonder what they are discussing. Painted on a contemporary bench. back to top

Front:“The Singing Fish” 1950

Singing Fish: One of many of his more decorative works, The Singing Fish, is replete with amorphous shapes, organic in feeling, that alternate with sharp black lines, spots and curves. The hard edge black line work cuts across bright and vivid colors making this piece almost childlike in its execution. Charming and whimsical.

Diego Rivera (1886-1957) Mexican

Rivera, a world famous artist, was a political activist and socially powerful. He was responsible for the Mexican Mural Renaissance and painted frescos in Mexico, San Franciso, New York and Detroit. He was a champion of the oppressed, loyal to the Mexican revolutionary cause. He had a turbulent on/again, off/again marriage with Frida Kahlo who was one of his favorite models. He spent time in Paris and considered Modigliani, Picasso, and Cezanne among his friends and influences. A registered communist he had Trotsky live with him in his home in Mexico after he was expelled from Norway.

Front & Back: “Nude with Calla Lilies” 1944

Nude with Calla Lilies: The back of the woman, possibly Frida Kahlo, is a bold, strong figure that embraces a basket of huge calla lilies. There is an Aztec influence here as in many of his works, and flat, sparse composition that is extremely dramatic.
